MeSH, מאפשר לעשות חיפוש ממוקד במאגר על פי משמעותו של המונח ומאפיינים נוספים של החומר המבוקש (סוג המחקר, מונחים חותכים ועוד), זאת בניגוד לחיפוש על פי מלים שיש לעשות על מושגים שאינם מוגדרים ב - MeSH.
MeSH מתעדכן כאמור מדי שנה בחודש דצמבר, והעדכון משקף את השינויים והחידושים בתחומים אותם הוא מכסה. כך למשל בשנת 2015 נכנס ל - MeSH המונח
Diet, Paleolithic ובאופן די מפתיע נכנס המונח
Diet, Vegan רק בעדכון של 2016. קודם לכן נכלל המושג טבעונות תחת הגדרה רחבה של
צמחונות.
